5 Decorating Tips for Your Costa del Sol Home

Designer tips for decorating a home on the Costa del Sol: sun-proof fabrics, natural materials, terrace living and a calm Mediterranean palette.

5 Designer Decorating Tips for Your Costa del Sol Home

A home on the Costa del Sol lives differently from a home in London, Toronto or Stockholm. The light is stronger, the air is saltier, and you spend half your day outdoors. Decor that looked perfect back home can feel heavy, dark or simply out of place here. These decorating tips will help you create a Costa del Sol home that feels calm, refined and easy to live in, whether it's your permanent home, a holiday escape or a rental.

1. Take your color palette from the landscape

One of the simplest rules that can be easily followed and implemented here is to look outside first before you choose a single paint color. Sand, sea, olive groves, terracotta rooftops and the white villages of the hills give you a palette that never feels forced. You can also easily notice the beautiful harmony the nature shows us that can be easily followed. Start with warm whites and soft neutrals on the walls, then add one or two accent colors. A deep olive, a dusty blue or a warm clay will feel at home here. Avoid stark, cool whites, which can look harsh in the strong southern light.

2. Choose fabrics that can handle the sun

The Andalusian sun and the wind, especially if living closer to the sea, although comforting at times they can definitely contribute quickly to the fading of outdoor and possibly indoor furniture. Bright cushions near a south-facing window can look tired after one summer. Choose linen, cotton and performance fabrics in lighter tones, which fade more gracefully. For anything on a terrace, look for solution-dyed outdoor fabrics, which hold their color far longer. Inside, sheer curtains filter light without blocking the view and many times black-out curtains can be of great help too.

3. Bring in natural materials

Mediterranean interiors feel good because they are built from honest, natural materials. Think oak or walnut, rattan, jute, stone, ceramic and linen. You don't need all of them at once. Pick one wood tone and repeat it through the home, then layer in texture with a jute rug, a ceramic lamp or a rattan pendant. Repeating the same wood tone is what makes a home look designed rather than collected piece by piece.

4. Soften hard floors with rugs

Most homes on the coast have marble or porcelain floors which are cool in summer and easy to clean, but they can make rooms echo and feel cold in winter. A well-sized rug changes everything. In the living room, choose one large enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and chairs to sit on it. A small rug floating in the middle of the floor makes the whole room look smaller. For the bedrooms, I would choose either a runner on each side of the bed or a larger rug so when you get out of the bed your feet comfortably fall on the rug.

5. Treat your terrace as another room

Most of us love life here because we spend a lot of times outdoor so the terrace or yard is almost like another room. Breakfast, sundowners, long dinners with friends: it deserves the same care as your living room. Start with comfortable seating, such as a sofa or two armchairs with a coffee table. Add a weather resistant outdoor rug, a couple of lanterns and potted plants. Choose powder-coated aluminum, teak or synthetic rattan, which cope much better with salt air than untreated metal.
