
Selecting Materials for the Coastal Climate
Why the Costa del Sol's humidity, salt air, and sun demand a different material specification than inland Spain.
The Costa del Sol is unforgiving on materials. Salt-laden air, intense ultraviolet exposure, and humidity swings that cycle a wall through the seasons all conspire against finishes that would last decades in Madrid.
When I specify materials for a coastal renovation, I start from the substrate out. A Dekton surface that performs beautifully in a dry interior can still fail if the adhesive layer beneath it absorbs humidity from a poorly tanked wall. The visible material is rarely the failure point — it is the assembly beneath it.
For kitchens and baths near the coast, I favour non-porous surfaces with low water absorption rates, full-height tanking in wet zones, and mechanical fixings over adhesive-only bonds wherever the budget allows. The goal is an assembly that tolerates the climate even when one layer fails.
Paint is the most visible casualty of coastal specification errors. Elastomeric coatings, proper substrate analysis, and anti-humidity primers are not upgrades here — they are baseline. A flawless finish in Marbella is engineered, not applied.
