Where to Buy Furniture in the Costa del Sol as a New Expat

You've got the keys…..The paperwork is signed and you are super excited for your new place on the Costa del Sol.

Now you are standing in an empty villa or apartment on the Costa del Sol wondering where on earth to start furnishing it and turning it into a home away from home.

Furnishing a home in a new country is one of the most overwhelming parts of moving to Spain. The stores are unfamiliar, delivery works differently and the language barrier is real so it's really easy to make mistakes and spend a lot of money on pieces that don't suit the climate, the space or the way you actually want to live.

As an English-speaking interior designer working between Marbella and Estepona, I help new homeowners through this every week. Here's my honest guide to where to shop and the mistakes I see most often.

Start With a Plan, not a Shopping Trip

Before you visit a single showroom, measure every room, note where the sockets and windows are, and decide how you will use each space. Is this a full-time home, a holiday base or a rental? How many in your family are there and will all of you be here at the same time? These answers will help you make better choices on fabric, how much you should spend on a sofa, and the color scheme. Buying room by room without a plan is the fastest way to end up with a home that feels like a furniture catalogue instead of yours or buying pieces that are not to scale or look pretty on the showroom but are not as comfortable for everyday use.

Where to Shop: A Brief Overview

Design-led Stores- Brands like Kave Home, Zocco Home, and Zara Home are popular with expats for good reason. They have modern Mediterranean styles, moderate to higher prices and designs that suit coastal living. They are great for dining chairs, side tables, lighting and accessories, even art and Zocco Home has furniture packages from medium to higher end if you like the Boho style. For a more personalized touch I highly recommend working with a local designer who can hand pick pieces you like rather than furnishing your home with pieces the stores sell, thus making your house look alike other homes.

Large-format Stores- IKEA in Málaga is the go-to for storage, kitchen basics, bedding and practical items. It's worth the drive for the essentials, but I would avoid furnishing an entire home from one budget store. It's the quickest route to a home that looks temporary and while I like IKEA, many of its furniture items are not as sturdy or made for long term living.

Local Showrooms and Independent Shops- Marbella and the surrounding area have excellent independent furniture and decor showrooms, including A. Benitez, BigSofass, Mukaby, Mad About Furniture, or even Yorskshire Linens which offers many furniture items and more personal service. This is often where you will find the statement pieces that make a home feel finished and Yorskshire Linens is definitely the place to go for linens, towels, bed spreads, decorative pillows and many accessories.

Luxury and Designer Brands- For investment pieces, brands such as The Majlis in Marbella or Eichholtz offer the quality and presence that suit larger villas. Many of these are best sourced through a designer, who can often access trade pricing and manage ordering for you.

Outdoor Furniture Specialists.- On the Costa del Sol your terrace is a second living room. Outdoor furniture needs to handle strong sun, salt air and occasional heavy rain, so buy from specialists rather than choosing garden furniture on looks alone. Notable stores include Mabel Home which specialize in outdoor furniture or online stores like Kave Home and Sklum which have great outdoor furniture for all price points. Even Leroy Merlin is worth exploring and Maison du Monde for a variety of pieces and outdoor décor.

El Corte Inglés- Spain's department store is reliable for bedding, towels, kitchenware and small appliances, as well as furniture and décor. They also have a great online selection for all your home needs.

The Mistakes I See Most Often

1. Buying for a Northern European Climate. Dark, heavy fabrics and thick rugs can feel oppressive in a Spanish summer. Natural linens, cottons, rattan and lighter tones work far better here.
2. Underestimating Delivery Times. Made-to-order sofas and designer pieces can take 8 to 16 weeks. If you are planning to move in or start renting by a certain date, order your key pieces first.
3. Not Checking Delivery and Assembly Terms. Some stores deliver only to the ground floor or curbside. If you are in a penthouse or a villa with a steep driveway, ask before you pay and most times in-home delivery prices are completely worth it if they bring it inside.
4. Choosing Outdoor Furniture that Won't Last. Cheap outdoor pieces fade, rust and crack within a season or two. Spending more on quality here almost always pays off; aluminum pieces are more durable and they can still look very nice, especially newer, more modern pieces.
5. Forgetting the Finishing Layer. Curtains, lighting, rugs, cushions and art are what make a house feel like home. Budget for them from the beginning rather than treating them as an afterthought.

A note on Language

Most larger stores along the coast have English-speaking staff, but smaller showrooms and delivery teams may not so having someone with you or a really good translation application will help.
